2Installation and first-time setup
Last updated
This chapter takes you from an empty Windows server to a working installation of SYNERGY Management Gateway with its first administrator. It covers:
- preparing the server and the database;
- running the installer (MSI);
- configuring the installation with the setup wizard, page by page;
- creating the first administrator;
- what to do next: activating the licence and adding the first directory connection;
- upgrading, re-running the wizard, uninstalling, and the update agent service.
Installation is a task for a server administrator. You need local administrator rights on the server, and you will usually need help from the person who looks after your SQL Server or PostgreSQL databases and the person who manages the site's certificate.
How installation works
Installation has three stages, each with its own tool:
| Stage | Tool | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Install | The MSI installer | Copies the API, the web console, the setup wizard and the update agent service to the server |
| 2. Configure | The setup wizard | Configures IIS, the database, secrets and settings, starts the application and checks that it is ready |
| 3. First administrator | The web console, opened on the server | Creates the first platform user, who holds the System Admin role |
The installer only puts files in place. Everything that needs answers from you — which database, which IIS site, which address users will type — is asked by the setup wizard, which the installer starts for you at the end. The wizard stays installed and can be run again at any time from the Start menu to change the configuration.
Note: Domain controllers are not configured during installation. Directory connections are created in the console after you sign in, and their credentials are stored encrypted in the database. See Chapter 5, Directory connections.
